Lonchaea belua
REMARKS. Closely related to sabroskyi but easily distinguished from it by the
forward position of the orbital bristles on the orbital plates, by its smaller size
and by many differences in the genitalia
MALE. Resembling L, sabroskyi, except as follows: Smaller; length about 4.0 to 5.0 mm.
Darker and duller, more sparsely haired, with brownish wings, yellowish-white calyptrae
and more obscurely yellowish tarsi. Frons narrower and more strongly narrowed anteriorly;
about 1.7 times as long as wide at anterior ocellus (7.1:6.0); with an inverted U-shaped
depression in front of ocellar triangle. Orbital bristles situated near anterior margin of orbital
plate. Orbital plate with 0 to 1 or 2 hairs above orbital bristle. Third antenna1 segment
more distinctly darkened on upper half.
Mesonotum duller; more extensively lightly dusted; less densely haired; no hairs in prescutellar
area. Scutellum shorter; disc sparsely haired. Prosternum with several hairs on the
margins only.
Wings distinctly brownish hyaline, even to naked eye; veins brown, becoming paler at
base. Stigmal section about 0.86 times as long as greatest width of costal cell (2.5:2.9).
Calyptrae dirty white, with pale yellowish margins and fringes; longer hairs at fold of
calyptrae less evidently so than in sabroskyi. Two basal segments of all tarsi brownishyellow;
distinctly more obscurely yellowish than in sabroskyi.
Abdomen more heavily brownish pollinose throughout. Apex without a very sharp;
semituberculate tip. Genitalia about half as large. Apodeme at base much smaller and
narrower. Epandrium in side view kidney-shaped; about twice as high as long; concave along
posterior margin; with a cluster of strong bristles on posteroventral corner, and just above
them, with an elongate, finger-like process projecting posteroventrally. Cerci relatively much
larger; with a cluster of stout setulae near ventral apex, and a smaller cluster of smaller setulae
middorsally. Surstyli entirely enclosed within, and largely fused with, epandrium; with a few
weak setulae on internal surface. Aedeagus nonsegmented; smoothly tubular; weakly S-shaped
in lateral view; gradually tapered from base to apex; apex slightly flared.
FEMALE. Resembling male except for usual sexual differences. Frons broader and
shinier; inverted U-shaped depression stronger. Tarsi somewhat paler on 2 basal segments.
Ovipositor distinctly more slender throughout than in sabroskyi. Apical segment much
shorter and narrower and with shorter hairs. Subbasal dorsal hairs arising at basal third; very
short; subequal in length to subapical dorsal hairs; subapical ventral hairs about twice as long
as dorsal ones, and almost twice as long as width of apical segment
