Lonchaea apricaria
MALE. Moderately small; length about 3.5 mm. Entirely dark species, with brownish
hyaline wings, dark brown calyptrae and entirely black tarsi. Eyes practically bare. Frons
distinctly narrowed anteriorly; width at anterior ocellus almost 1.4 times as great as at lunule
(5.5:4.0); without grooves or depressions; silky shiny from above; brownish pollinose from
below; hairs moderately short; orbital plates without hairs above orbital bristle. Lunule,
face and parafacials dull greyish pollinose. Lunule with 4 or 5 setulae on each side. Parafacials
almost linear. Cheek narrow; oral margin with 6 or 7 fairly long oral setulae in a
single row. Antennae long. Segments one and two black. Third segment narrowly
orange-red at inner base; about 2.4 times as long as wide (6.0:2.5). Arista practically bare;
entirely black.
Mesonotum zhining black; bluish reflections dark and weak. Hairs moderately short,
but dense and erect; some arising in prescutellar area, but none in notopleural depression.
Pollen brassy-brown; restricted to prescutellar area and notopleural depressions. Scutellum
wholly brassy brown pollinose; with 2 lateral and 2 apical setulae in addition to usual bristles.
Mesopleuron with 4 or 5 posterior and 3 anterodorsal bristles. With a single stigmata1 bristle.
No hairs behind single sternopleural bristle. Pteropleuron without setulae. All pleural
sclerites pollinose.
Wing distinctly brownish hyaline; veins brown; stigma1 section shorter than greatest
width of costa (2.9:3.5). Calyptrae greyish-brown; margins and fringes chocolate-brown;
fold of calyptrae with 5 or 6 very long, stiff hairs; these almost twice as long as other hairs
in fringe. Legs and tarsi entirely uniformly brownish-black.
Abdomen shining black with faint dark blue reflections. Brown pollinose along anterior
margins of all terga, and on disc of 3 bazal terga. Sterna entirely dull pollinose; sternum one
without hairs. Genitalia similar in general appearance to those of L. chorea Fab. but differing
as follows: Cerci relatively smaller in side view. Surstylus with posteroventral angle in form
of a small triangle point projecting beyond epandrium in side view. Aedeagus nonsegmented;
simply cane-shaped with a bulbous swelling just before the apex; rather slender throughout,
scarcely thicker at base than at apex.
