Lonchaea linefacies
MAI.E. Moderately small; length about 4.0 mm. Glossy blue-black, with brownis11
wings, white calyptrae and entirely black tarsi. Head little wider than high. Compound eyc
barc. Frons rather broad; dirrinctly narrowed anteriorly; width at anterlor occllus 1.3 nmcs
that at lunule (6.5:S.O); liglltly greyish dusted from helow; silky black from abooc; hairs
wry short and rleprcssed; orbital plates polished metallic blue; no hairs on orbital plate^ above
orbital 1)ristlc. 1,unule intensely silvery pollinose; the silvery pollen continuing downward on
mid-line of face almtwt to oral margin, and appearing as a ctmspicuous, parallel-sided stripe.
Pace otherwise vcry thinly dusted; rather shiny along oral margin. Lunule with 10 or I 1
semlae on each side; bare along middle. Parafacial nearly linear; highly polished opporite
base of antenna. Cheek scarcely as wide as rllird antennal segment; oral margin with 4 or 5
very fine, shorr oral setulae in a single row. Antenna long; two basal segments dark brown;
third s e p e n t reddish-l~rown at inner base; fully 2.5 tinic~ as long as wide (7.5:?.9). Arista
plumose; width of plumosity almost half as wide as third antennal segment.
XIesonocum p-olishcd blue-black. with weak violet overtones. Hairs very short and
depressed; nonc in prcscuteflar area or notopleural depression. Pollen sparse; brop-nish;
rcsuicted to prescutellar area and lower margin of notople~rron. Scutellum uniformly greyish
dusted; wit11 or 3 lateral. but \+,ithour apical sctulae. \\'it11 single dorsocentral and acrostical
bristles. IVith 1 to ? very weak stigmata1 bristles. .\l;esopleuron with Z posterior and 2
antemdorsal bristles; usually with I or 2 fine hairs behind single sternopleural bristle. Ptcroplcuron
without hairs. hlesopleuron and stcrnopleuron almost entirely polished; pteropleuron
polished on anterior third or more.
Wing distinctly brownish-hyaline, by virtue of rather coarse brown microtrichiae.
Veins yellowish-brown. Stigma1 section of costa short; about 0.8 times as long as greatest
width of costal cell (3.0:3.5). Calyptrae white with concolorous margins and fringes. Legs
and tarsi entirely dark brownish-black.
Abdomen with extremely bright azure-blue reflections above; without pollen except
anteriorly in middle. First sternum polished; without hairs. Cercus in side view resembling
those of L. albitmsis Zetterstedt. Epandrium similar to that of L. fzmosa Egger, but more
broadly rounded at posteroventral angle. Surstylus almost entirely enclosed within epandrium;
posteroventral corner barely projecting; anterior margin truncate with a tubercle in middle;
inner surface, about half way between meson and ventral margin, with 2 or 3 tiny setulae in
a longitudinal row. Aedeagus with 2 segments. Basal segment L-shaped in lateral view;
rather stout; cleft and slightly flared at ventral apex, the swollen or flared portion with
numerous spicules. Apical segment extremely short; less than twice as long as wide; forming
simple tube about one-fourth the diameter of the basal segment at their point of union
Posterior gonopophysis strongly sclerotized; almost as large as anterior one; erect. FEMALE. Resembling male except for wider frons, paler wings, and shorter, sparser hairs
throughout. Silvery stripe down middle of face somewhat narrower and less conspicuous.
Ovipositor slender. Sides of enu ultimate segment parallel; becoming gradually narrower just
before apical segment. Apical segment rather triangular; about twice as long as wide, or little
longer than width of enu ultimate segment; sides almost straight, meeting in a rounded, but
rather fine, point; dorsal hairs inconspicuous, subapical ventral hairs about half as long as
apical segment.
