Dasiops chaetiosus
REMARKS. This remarkable spccies seems to combine characters of Dasiops,
Cbaetolo?lchaen and Lo?lcknen. 1n general it resembles Chaetolonchaea SDD. more I I
than anvdiin$ else, hut ir has postst~paral bristles and a strongly setulose lunule;
if it did not have poststigmatal setulae it would fit fairly comfortably with
Loncknen peregrinn! Recker and its allies. When the male becomes known it may
be necessary to erect a new genus for it.
FEMALE. Very large; length to base of extensive portion of ovipositor about 6.0 mm.
Shining blue-black. Head with an inflated appearance as in Chaetolonchaea; about 1.5 times
as wide as high. Compound eye with very short, sparse pubescence; hairs about equal in length
to diameter of an ommatidium. Frons satin-shiny, blue-black; with a transverse, gently concave
depression just above middle which almost reaches both sides; about 1.25 times as wide as long;
sides diverging rather strongly toward parafacials; hairs numerous and erect, long; with numerous hairs on orbital plates above orbital bristles. Lunule very large, coarsely
and abundantly setulose, and protrusive. Parafacial extremely broad; distinctly broader than
third antennal segment; polished black. Cheek very broad; with numerous, stiff, scattered
hairs, none of which are outstanding and vibrissa-like. Antennae entirely black; third segment
about 1.35 times as long as wide.
Alesonoturn densely and uniformly hairy, the hairs suberect but not particularly long.
Prescutcllar area witli a few fine hairs. hTotopleural depression bare except for usual bristles.
Scutellum with several strong hairs on lateral margins before and between the scutellar
bristles, hut with apex and disc bare. \\'ith numerous weak, scattered, poststigmatal and
srigmatal hairs. Sternopleuron with one strong bristle and numerous hairs, some of which
arise behind the strong Ijristle. .\lesopleuron without anterodorsal bristles; with 10 to 11
strong bristles along posterior margin. Prostcrnum bare.
First three segments of all tarsi clear yellow. Anterodorsal cilia of hind tibia relatively
strong; forming a complete, uniform row. Preapical dorsal tibial bristles scarcely discernible.
Calyptrae pale brownish-white; with dark-brown margins and fringes, the fringes uniform in
length. Wings pale yellowish-white hyaline.
Abdomen polished blue-black; very sparse, greyish pollen evident under high magnification
on terga one to five inclusive. Ovipositor long and slender. Apical segment unusual
for this genus; very similar in shape and chaetotaxy to that of Chaetolonchaea pallipennis
(Zett.), i.e., with two very long, dorsal hairs arising near base, followed by two short ones,
and with a pair of rather long ventral hairs arising just before the apex.
MALE. Unknown.but not very
