Lonchaea marshalli
Diagnosis: Male.—Differing from continentalis and impressifrons as follows:
slightly larger: approximately 3.0 mm. Darker, shining black; with very faint bluish
reflections. Frons appearing somewhat broader and less narrowed anteriorly; almost
as long between anterior ocellus and lunule as wide at former (5.0:5.1); approxi¬
mately four-fifths as wide at lunule as at posterior ocellus (4.0:5.1); with a conspic¬
uous, oval depression in middle which is more distinct than in continentalis and less
so than in impressifrons.
Wings darker. Apical three segments of all tarsi darker.
Genitalia (Figs. 49, 50, 52, 53) larger; broader in ventral view. Cerci longer and
broader. Epandrium similar in lateral aspect to that of continentalis; more rectangular
than in impressifrons. Surstylus similar to that of continentalis, but with a stronger
spine anteriorly and a smaller flange along the inner margin. Aedeagus similar to that
of continentalis, but smaller and more tenuous.
Female.—Similar to male. Length, exclusive of ovipositor, approximately 3.5
mm. Frons broader; width at lunule about five-sixths that at anterior ocellus (5.0:
6.0); wider at lunule than length between latter and anterior ocellus (5.0:4.5); frontal
depression broader; somewhat heart-shaped.
Ovipositor (Figs. 75, 76) longer and slimmer than in continentalis and impressi¬
frons-, in dorsal view with a slight bulge near apical one-third; in lateral view with a
short kink at point of bulge. Spermatheca (Fig. 64) as in continentalis but larger.
Gland at juncture of spermathecal ducts (Fig. 68) more nearly spherical than in
continentalis.
