Lonchaea carpathica
P152
Lonchaea carpathica V. Kovalev, 1974: Ent. Obozr., 53: 450
Male. Orbital plates completely devoid of pollen. Ocellar tubercle with 3 to4 pairs of hairs no longer than the postvertical bristles. Row along mouth margin containing 7-10 (usually 8-9) setiferous hairs. Third antennal segment with a straight or weakly convex anterior margin; its length 1.4-1.65 times its width Hairs on scutum shorter than in L. caucasica and more inclined. Scutellum with 1-3 setiferous hairs between apical and lateral bristles. Mesonotum largely covered with pollen, only a transverse area adjacent to the posterior margin shiny. Patch of very fine pollen sometimes present on upper part of sternopleuron in front of bristle. Hairs on sternopleura of practically the same length as those on mesopleura; hairs sometimes present above sternopleural bristle, but no hairs behind it. Wing veins ranging from light yellow to yellow-brown. Segment of costal vein between sc and r1 equal to or practically equal to greatest width of costal cell (appearing shorter) and 2.2-2.4 times as long as ta.
Abdominal tergite IV entirely shiny, without pollen. Sternite II with grey pollen. Like the following sternites. Hypopygium unusually elongate; distal ends of lobes of epandrium projecting beyond end of abdomen. in addition to cerci. Most similar in structure to L. marylandica but the length of the epandrium is 3.3 times its width, whereas in L. marylandica It is less than 2.5 times. Distal ends of lobes of epandrium elongate and narrowly rounded, as in L. marylandica. but in contradistinction to L limatula and L. caucasica; aedeagus without teeth. Female. Hairs on body and legs shorter than in male. Width of frons on a level with the anterior ocellus 1.15-1.3 times its minimum width. Lunule rust-coloured, broader and lower than in male; its upper margin forms a gentle arc. Parafacials broader above than in male. as in L. caucasica.
Scutellum with a single setiferous hair between apical and lateral bristles Metanotum covered with pollen along anterior margin and on sides. and with a pollen patch on a shiny black ground in the middle; this patch may extend sideways; sometimes only a transverse area adjacent to the posterior margin remains shiny, as in the male. Pollen of pleura thinner than in male. Segment of costal vein between sc and dr1 l.9-2..5 times as long as ta. Abdominal tergite IV invariably shiny, without traces of pollen. Sternite fl with fine pollen, sometimes with shiny patches practically devoid of pollen on the sides. Ovipositor as in Fig. 1. 4-6. Subbasal dorsal hairs. in contrast to those of L. caucasica, no longer than width of terminal segment of ovipositor, half as long as sub apical ventral hairs. Otherwise the species corresponds to L caucasica.
Body length 3.7-4.2 mm holotype 4 mm. length of wing 4.5-5.1 mm (holotype 4.5 mm).
Material. Trans Carpathian Province. Kvasy. From larvae and puparia collected in rotting beech timber in 1963.
Holotype and paratypes collected on 23 June. emerged 26 June (holotype and paratypes 1. 2. 5), 30 June (paratype 3). 4 Aa;. (pam— type 4); paratypes 6. 7. ~, collected 16 June. parrn’pe 6 emerged 26 June N. P. Krivosheina). The holotype and paratype 4 are in the ZIN collection. the other material is in IEMEZh.
Kovalev (1974) records obtaining the type material from rotting Fagus, Maca (1999) also records an association with Fagus in the Czech Republic although it is unclear whether or not this just refers to Kovalev's breeding record.
