Earomyia lonchaeoides
Adult : E. lonchaeoides is a medium sized species with a rather elongated abdomen. Overall body colour is dull greyish brown and it is more heavily dusted with cinerous pollen than any other Lonchaeid. It is a weakly haired species with very wide genae and parafacials. Uniquely amongst European Earomyia species the tarsomeres are entirelly dark.
The antennal flagellomere is nearly as broad as it is long and the arista is bare, the eye is sparsely pubescent. There is a single stigmatical setae. The anepisternum has several antero-dorsally directed setulae on the anteriodorsal angle, the uppermost one being setae-like. There are five hair-like posterior setae. The katepisternum has a dorsal row of setulae, the posterior one is the strongest, the remaining four or five becoming weaker anteriorly. The scutellum has several lateral and apical setulae in addition to the usual four setae. Wings can vary from clear to slightly brownish fumose.

In central and northern Europe the adult is one of the earliest Lonchaeids on the wing in spring being recorded as early as 14th February in Germany when air temperatures were 2.5C. In Russia it has been reported as being numerous on the trunks of oak and aspen, and in Germany also on tree trunks and fence posts, presumably warming up in the early spring sunshine
