Vladimir Grigoryevich Kovalev

Vladimir Grigoryevich Kovalev (1942-1987)
Kovalev worked mainly on the lower orthorrhaphous fossil Brachycera, but also did taxonomic work on the higher families of nematocerous fossil Diptera and living taxa of Empidoidea and Lonchaeidae. Kovalev described some 20 species of Lonchaeaidae, all in the genus Lonchaea, from the territories of the formaer Soviet Union. many of these have been subsequently found in other parts of western Europe. . Kovalev's untimely death in 1987 was a great loss to the research of fossil Diptera and to the taxonomy of  Lonchaeidae.
