Abstract:

As part of a study of insects attacking fir (A. alba Mill.), E. impossibile Morge and E. grusia Morge, were examined in detail and recorded for the 1st time in Romania. The female of E. impossibile, not described in detail so far, was characterized by its ovipositor. Both species were specific for fir cones. Their relatively great abundance and their vast area of distribution suggest placing second in importance to Resseliella piceae Seitner and Megastigmus suspectus Borries as fir pests. Their larval period lasts about 3 mo. One larva destroys, on an average, 3 fir seeds. The change into a pupa takes place in the ground or under the cone scales which drop off with the pupae. The imagines fly in the 2nd half of May, when the flowers are formed.
